Identifying water supply solutions such as irrigation and water pumping are crucial for agricultural and rural development projects in the semi-arid region. In the first two years (2006-2008), the projects implemented in Pintadas (Pintadas Solar) acted as pilot projects for the effective identification of irrigation and water pump systems that fit the needs of the semi-arid region. A total of 7 systems were installed, allowing a number of variables for the use of the water and of the technology to be tested. Some utilised the same dam, irrigating by “dripping” technology. In other locations, where little water was available due to the distance from the dam, the Organic Hydroponics (Organoponics) system was tested. An experimental approach was taken to the project approach with the learning and results being documented at each step of the process. The project results showed an improvement in productivity and increased confidence from the farmers. The farmers involved were able to produce goods for their own consumption as well as for sale at local fairs. Through the commercialisation of the goods produced, the return on investment for the systems implemented was shown to be between 1.5 years for the lower cost systems and 6 years for the more expensive systems utilising a photovoltaic solar pump..jpg)
As a result of this pilot program, the Adapta Sertão network decided to use standard technological systems that are easy to install and can be adapted to different situations. These systems are based on:
