Commercialisation

The commercialisation of agricultural produce is a fundamental part of any production process as it generates necessary capital for the activities to be profitable and produce an income. Due to climate change, agricultural production in the Sertão could decrease. For this reason, an effective commercialisation strategy is fundamental and needs to occur on multiple levels: the local level where the farmer sells their products directly to people living in their own community; the regional level, where the farmer enters into an agreement with small and medium local and regional distributors and the national and international level where the farmer sells to larger companies for export to other parts of the country or the world.

Each one of these commercialisation strategies needs to be evaluated based on different technical and economical factors such as the potential of the product in that market, the quality of the product, technical quality specifications and price and delivery volume.
The differentiating factor of the Adapta Sertão network is that it creates a network of small producers that are adapting to the challenges that climate change brings and need access to new markets in order to guarantee sustainability for their businesses. Therefore, key initiatives are being developed such as products to cater to the fair-trade markets, organic food produce and the development of a specific certification for producers that work in areas with a high risk of climate vulnerability.
